Everyone uses well water from an outside pump to cook and wash dishes. The boys also use the pump to fill up their bathing buckets and brush their teeth, and all of the kids use it to wash their laundry. (Matthew, Lee, and I take our laundry up the street to have it washed and dried in machines for a few pesos, but the kids just have too much laundry to be able to do that for everyone.) Water that comes from the ground is pretty clean, but we still don’t drink it directly.
Boys and girls alternate washing the dishes, sweeping the floors, and cleaning the counters. Everyone puts their dishes into a bucket of water, and whoever is washing that day transfers the dishes to a bucket of soapy water. Then the dishes are put into a bucket of rinse water, rinsed again under the pump, and stacked in the dish drainer to dry.
